One of central Pennsylvania’s most popular races will return for its 39th year on Sunday.

The Nittany Valley Half-Marathon benefiting Centre Volunteers in Medicine will start at 10 a.m. from Penn State’s Snider Ag Arena. Same-day registration is available starting at 8:30 a.m.

The chip timed, 13.1-mile race draws hundreds of runners who will follow a course “through rolling countryside, along scenic Spring Creek and through quaint Houserville,” according to the marathon’s website.

“This race has been a staple of the local running community since its inception in 1984. It offers a moderately challenging course to runners of any ability,” Monica Mahoney, registration coordinator, said in a news release. “We are thrilled to partner again with Centre Volunteers in Medicine in the planning of the half and to help raise awareness of the services they provide to our community.”

Proceeds benefit CVIM’s work to provide quality healthcare to the uninsured in Centre County.

Most of the half-marathon’s route is open to traffic, and drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible.

“Residents are encouraged to take a different route as this area likely will be congested until at least 11:30 AM,” Patton Township police wrote in a social media post, “If you are traveling on these roadways, please use caution and drive safely!”
